The purpose of this classification is to aid in the collection of utility asset locations using the Global Positioning System. Duties and responsibilities include: creating maps and graphs, operating and assisting in the maintenance of GIS hardware, software, and other related equipment, data entry and analysis. This position operates under the supervision of the Public Works Director.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. • Create maps and graphs, using ArcGIS software
• Operate and assist in the maintenance of GIS system hardware, software, plotter, and related equipment.
• Ability to understand and operate a Trimble GPS unit to collect data and import the data into the GIS software
• Enter new map data using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales.
• Analyze geographic relationships among varying types of data
• Read and interpret basic civil engineering and architectural drawings
• Be proficient with computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office, email, and internet browser programs
• Work in outdoor (collecting data, storm water inlets, manholes, pipes, etc.) and indoor (office) environments
• Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision
• Ability to open manhole and storm grates with hooks (see physical ability below)

Minimum Qualifications


Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver's license, and have completed or be enrolled in a recognized curriculum at an institution of higher education in Geographical Information Systems or closely related program.
