The Town of Winter Park is accepting applications for a full-time Equipment Operator I. Applicants must possess a valid State Driver's License and have a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). This year-round position has excellent benefits and requires various types of manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of equipment, streets, parks, and other Town assets. May also operate light and moderately heavy maintenance and construction equipment used on public works projects. Previous equipment operation experience and the possession of a Commercial Drivers License, Class B is a plus. Position is subject to a screening process including criminal history search, employment verification, a Motor Vehicle Record check, and drug and alcohol testing (dependent on the type of Driver's License). SUMMARY

Under the close supervision of the Street Superintendent and direction from Equipment Operator III and Equipment Operator II, the Equipment Operator I is to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Town streets, storm sewer systems, and related appurtenances; to operate light and moderately heavy maintenance and construction equipment used on public works projects; and to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Performs heavy manual labor duties as required in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and storm sewer systems, including but not limited to preparing street surfaces for patching and/or resurfacing; shoveling and spreading gravel, sand, asphalt and other materials on streets; assisting with paving, patching, oiling, sealing and smoothing roads; laying pipes for storm sewers.

  • Sets forms and finishes concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and ADA ramps, etc.

  • Fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs street signs, paints streets and parking lot markings.

  • May operate light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment, including vehicles, various trucks, street sweeper, manlift, tamper, lawn care equipment, concrete mixer, paint machine, uses masonry tools, carpentry tools, mechanics tools, plumbing tools, various other common hand and power tools, measuring devices, and safety gear.

  • Loads and hauls water, gravel, rock, debris and various materials to and from project sites.

  • Provides traffic control around work sites, including setting up barricades, warning signs, and cones, as well as flagging traffic.

  • Participate in snow removal operations for the Town; operate snow removal equipment; perform preventive maintenance on snow equipment and vehicles.

  • Performs general building and grounds maintenance work as requested; maintains clean and orderly work areas.

  • Performs weed abatement duties as related to projects and operations.

  • Performs routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment; cleans, maintains and performs minor adjustments to equipment as necessary.

  • Performs all work in compliance with departmental policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, approved plans and specifications.

  • May work on call during evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled.


  • Assist other departments as required to complete the Mission of the Town of Winter Park.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Modern principles, practices, techniques, equipment, materials and tools used in general construction and maintenance operations.

  • Safe and proper operation and maintenance of tools, equipment used in public works construction and maintenance operations.

  • Basic record keeping techniques.

Ability to:


  • Read, learn, understand, and apply pertinent policies, procedures, regulations.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations.

  • Ability to prioritize a wide scope of duties and multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to perform duties requiring discretion and independence of action; exercise initiative and sound judgment and to react resourcefully under varying conditions.

  • Meets physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties safely and effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:


  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:


  • Minimum of one-year broad-based experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, storm sewer infrastructure and facilities.

Additional Requirements:


  • Possession of a valid Colorado drivers license.

Knowledge:


  • City policies and procedures.

  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in streets maintenance.

  • General knowledge of street design and maintenance practices and standards.

  • Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous materials used in the workplace.

  • Federal, State, and Town safety rules and regulations.

  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Skills:


  • Using initiative and independent judgement within established procedural guidelines.

  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.

  • Safe use of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and cleaning compounds.

  • Troubleshooting repairs on irrigations systems and equipment.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers.

  • Effective verbal and written communication.

  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

GUIDELINES AND SCOPE

All federal, state, and local laws. Work requires discretion and judgment in interpreting Town policies, laws, and ordinances and analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents.
